Columbia College graduate and chemistry major, Pawan
Rastogi, placed first in the chemistry division of the 2008 DOE Science and
Energy Research Challenge (SERCh) poster competition, held in November at Oak
Ridge National Laboratory. Since his
graduation from Columbia in 2007, Pawan has interned at Los Alamos National
Laboratory under the direction of Dr. Jennifer Hollingsworth. Congratulations to Pawan!
The SERCh Competition showcases the research projects of DOE-funded students and interns at the national laboratories. Up to 100 entrants convened at Oak Ridge to present their posters. The researchers vie for scholarships of $3,000, $1,500, or $1,000, for 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place finishes, in each of five categories. As first place finisher in the chemistry division, Pawan received the $3,000 award.
You can learn more about the DOE competition on the SERCh website and view the list of winners in all categories on the winners’ website. Click here to see Pawan's poster and here to view an abstract of his research project.
Congratulations to Professor Louis Brus on receiving the 2009 Willard Gibbs Medal for his past and current work on the chemistry of materials, interfaces, nanocrystals, and nanotubes. This is the second major award received by Professor Brus in 2008, the other being the Kavli Prize in nanoscience, which he received from the Norwegian Academy of Sciences and the Kavli Foundation in September.
The Gibbs Medal has been awarded since 1911 to notable chemists by the Chicago Division of the American Chemical Society. Most of the awardees are familiar to chemists regardless of specialty. The selection of Professor Brus brings to four the number of Gibbs medal holders currently in Columbia's chemistry department. The others are Professors Ronald Breslow, Gilbert Stork, and Nicholas Turro.
You can find more information about the Gibbs Medal on the ACS Chicago Division website. Information about Professor Brus's research progam can be found on his group website.
Congratulations to Professor Virginia Cornish on receiving two prestigious awards for her outstanding research program on new approaches for the modification of biomolecules in living cells.
On December 1, the Protein Society announced that Professor Cornish was awarded the Irving Sigal Young Investigator Award, which recognizes “a significant contribution to the study of proteins by a scientist who is in the early stages of an independent career.” Earlier, it was announced here that Professor Cornish received the 2009 Pfizer Award in Enzyme Chemistry "for outstanding work in enzyme chemistry where the presence of enzyme action is unequivocally demonstrated."
More information about Professor Cornish's research can be found on the Cornish Group Website. Information about the Protein Society can be found at http://www.proteinsociety.org/ and information about the ACS Division of Biological Chemistry can be found at: http://www.biochemdivision.org/
